How do I prevent download of Verisign seal from taking too long?

I recently purchased an SSL Certificate from Verisign. To display their seal on my site, I have code (provided by Verisign) like this:

<script src=https://seal.verisign.com/getseal?host_name=mysite.com&size=S&use_flash=NO&use_transparent=NO&lang=en></script>

Yesterday I noticed that every page with the seal on it was taking up to 15 seconds to load, and ultimately came up without the seal. My hosting service verified that the problem (delay) was with the seal.verisign.com site ... it was not responding in a timely fashion.

I removed the seal from the pages and then they displayed just fine.

My question is: is this something I should complain to Verisign about, or is there something that I should code in to "give up" after trying for a certain amount of time (like 3 seconds instead of 15)?

If you talk to Verisign about the speed it's taking to download, they may allow you to host your own copy of the image...they should provide a quick solution.

Here's what verisign had to say:

"Sometimes the seal can load slower.  Unfortunately, there is nothing that we can do to fix this.  It may be conflicting with other items on the page and if those items download to the site slowly, the seal will load after they do.  I am sorry that you experienced this problem.  Unfortunately, we do not have a way to make the loading faster.  "

I kept pushing, and ultimately got a reasonable workaround from Verisign:

"Thank you for contacting VeriSign. The file being sent from the seal server for the logo is about 14k and may take a second to load based on the server, browsers, and connection speeds on each end. The seal does use flash so that would also need to be installed on the web browser and can slow loading time.


We were having some problems at one point with the server which have now been resolved and the slow seal was probably a result of this. This issue has been resolved and we of course will try to prevent it from happening again. If however you want to make sure this never happens again I would recommend that you make a static image of the seal and place that on your homepage as this will of course always load immediatly. From there you can then link the static image to another page with the proper seal installed so that people who wish to verify the seal can check its details from this new page."
