Hello

I have a 1721 router with 1 fastethernet and 1 T-1 module.
I have an empty slot and I'd like to add another fastethernet OR ethernet card. what are my options for both fastethernet and ethernet?

You can add a WIC-1ENET to the 1721 to add a 10Mbps Ethernet interface.

Alternatively you could add a WIC-4ESW to the router which basically integrates a multilayer switch.  You could create VLAN's and SVI's (VLAN interfaces) to route between.

are there any single-port 100 mbit interfaces?

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

Nope, not that I have ever seen.  The WIC-1ENET would be perfect for a DSL connection with an ethernet handoff if that is what you will be using it for.

Exactly right - none of the 1700 series support a single FastEthernet interface for WAN interfaces.   As JFrederick29 mentioned, a WIC-4ESW or WIC-1ENET would be the way to go.

See also "Table 2 WAN Support for the Cisco 1721":

Yes, there's the network module NM-1FE-TX (& variations thereof), which isn't supported on the 1700 series.
