I'm not sure where to go with this.  So does this mean that the JRE/JDK now include the COMM classes?  I am using j2sdk1.4.2_09 currently.

Basically I am just looking to open COM5 (a USB COM driver) and print the incoming COM (a barcode hand scanner) to the screen (println).

Sun says: Implementations of the API are currently available for Solaris SPARC, Solaris x86, and Linux x86

But Here you hear: accessing serial ports in the Windows environment using the Java Communications API
