Problem printing with an HP Laserjet 1020

Experts, each time I try to print with the above, I get an error message that says "spooler subsystem app has encountered a problem and needs to close."

I've checked the printer box and the Laserjet 1020 icon does NOT appear in it, even though the driver program ("Laserjet 1020 series") is listed among the Add or Remove" program tally.

Help! Thanks.

Amendment to the above. The printer icon DOES appear in the print box when the printer is NOT turned on. When the printer IS turned on, it's not there....

OK, nobus: after uninstalling printer I got a new error message telling me that Windows was closing down the spooler subsystem to protect the computer; then got the old "spooler subsystem app has encontered a problem, and needs to close" message.

The attempt to reinstall the printer from its CD worked until I was told to plug in the machine, ditto the usb cable; after that, nothing happened, so exited the installation.

In researching the problem, I got to this page:

...but didn't proceed with the info as I couldn't figure out how to get into safe mode via "Start," nor how to get at files in Inernet Explorer. (Also the warning at the top freaked me!)

start in safe mode : tap F8 key during boot.
you can always backup the registry BEFORE making changes

OK, tap F8 during normal boot to get into safe mode; then to access IE files?

My error: says to open Wndows Explorer--now, how to I find it? Not in start|programs; I have XP Home....

OK, Nobus...sorry for the delay. Before going through the drill above, I tried to install driver per your link, also above. Printer worked, which leads me to believe that the problem was with a corrupted drive.

Anyway, thanks so much for your help. Seems to me you were essentially instrumental in fixing the problem, so you get the points.

Thanks, nobus--but alas, there's a sad PS: the printer is working, but now produces copy with recurrent dotlike marks on the left margin of the pages plus, every now and then, horizontal lines on copy that change position from page to page.

A psychosis-inducing conversation with an HP "technician" netted me the promise of a new cartridge coming to me in the mail (I won't wait by the mailbox...). My sense of things is that the problem has to do with both the current cartridge and the machine's fuser....

When you try to print  a PDF Doc. the print spooler services stops working....you have to restart the print spoolers services and cancel all doc in spool
