Hi wulfstan,
A good program (free) for cleaning up install problems is CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com).
The primary function is to just clean up the 'junk' that accumlates on our computers - but - it has an "Issues" piece that will clean up all the trash in your registry.

What is your OS?
If you have XP SP2, there is a built-in pop-up stopper that you can activate.

I never like to see folks installing extra programs on their computers if the OS can do it for you.
