Are there any freeware apps that will allow me to convert .ico files to .gif's ?

I've sifted thru google, and all I've come up with is 10yr old Shareware, that is limited and won't let you convert w/ out paying up...
Why is this such a protected secret ?  Shouldn't converting .ico to .gif be easier ?

Thanks,

Hi,

have you had a look at irfanview?
http://www.irfanview.com/

this acheives what you want. I just tried it.  You can save your ico to any image format with it

For image viewing and simple manipulation I think this the best tool around - for detailed complex changes I'd of course go with photoshop.

nope ...

irfanview will save to a gif, but it creates it with a black background
photoshop don't work either

irfanview will save to a gif and you can select to "save transperent color" such that if you do not have a fully coloured gif you can select the transparent colour and it will be saved with the gif - so it retains the same properties as the original icon.

besides - I thought you just wanted a converter

If you set savetransparent colour and then say save pallette entry of 0 - when you open it in irfanview it looks as though it has a black background (by default this is what it does with the transparent colour

if you then open it with say microsoft picture viewer you will see it has a gray background - as this is its default for transparent colours
