reading a CD-R?

Any tests I can do to see why?

Yup, there are plently of hardware diagnostics software available.

However, testing a CD-ROM is quite easy. Just, right click and explore the drive to see if it can read the contents rather than double clicking it. Test few other CDs to see if its a problem with the driver. If the drive can read other cds, then either the cd-r should be bad or should have been written in a format unrecognized by this drive. Usually firmware update available for your drive should make it read most of the CD formats available.
