I have a system with two monitors connected to the computer.  One is connected to the VGA Port of my monitor card the other to the DVI port

The monitor connected to the DVI port, I use infrequently.  The problem is that when I start the computer with the DVI monitor off it throws off the settings of my "main" monitor (the one connected to the VGA port.).  I had this same configuration on another computer at it worked flawlessley.

Under display properties the VGA monitor is listed as 2 and the DVI monitor is listed as 1. I'm thinking this may have something to do with the problem.

is there a way to switch the identify of the two monitors.

When you go to the display settings, select the VGA monitor and make sure that the 'Use this device as the primary montor' is selected.  You may have to have the second monitor on and connected for you to be able to change it.  This should change your default monitor.
