Tomcat - Log Problem

I see logs being updated in Tomcat at startup, but after that log files are not being updated.

I have deployed a web application, but when i try to start it i get error message on the Tomcat manager application page: FAIL - Application at context path /xxx could not be started.

So, i want to debug - what is causing it to fail to start.

I think log4j and logging of tomcat are getting in the way of each other. Because the web application that i am deploying uses log4j, and tomcat is using jdk logger.

But i can't be sure...

Tomcat uses commons-logging, and hence able to be configured to use Log4j as well.  This page in the user guide may help:

http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-5.5-doc/logging.html

There shouldn't be a problem of stepping on each other's toes if your log4j jar is placed in your webapp, under WEB-INF/lib.
