Event ID 3018

OurWindows 2003 Exchange server reported two errors of Event ID 3018 in the Application Log saying "A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.4.0 was generated for an e-mail address that we do not recognize.  This message indicates a DNS problem or IP address issue.  We have checked DNS and everything appears to be fine and we do not know the addresses of the recipients listed in the errors.  Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.

That means the server has generated an NDR. If you have only received two of them then there is nothing to worry about.

You haven't said if the addresses were internal or external. If they were for an internal domain then configuring recipient filtering and the tar pit is a better option as it will NDR the messages immediately for the sender.

The recipient addresses were external or so they looked like as they had recipient rfc822.glen.hoffman@pgnmail.com Message id A608958405840854@smith.abc.com which the second part is our domain, the @smith.abc.com but don't know the recipient address.

We have recipient filtering currently configured.

Internal message ID probably indicates that the message was generated internally. Could be something as simple as OOTO message to a spam message - as most spam is spoofed.
