Unexpected Error problems

i have been recently having major issues with my computer over the last 24 hours.  First i tried to play Civ 4 and my computer collapsed and restarted.  then the game just stopped working all together.  i tried to reinstall and have been getting issues during the setup process saying certain files are different in the setup file and it asks to abort retry or ignore it suggests it may be the medium i am running the wizard on.  Game won't work but the real issue is my system shuts itself down randomlly now.  When it restarts and runs the checkdisk which has been getting many unexpected errors and shutting down multiple times before it starts up.  My bluetooth mouse and keyboard have been going in and out randomly aswell. i have also gotten different errors when windows does start saying i should run a driver check on a specific drier but its a different one each time.  What sugestions do you have?!!

Sounds like alot of problems you have..

Sure if you wanted to spend ages trying to fix them all then thats up to you. But personally I recommend you backup all your documents, etc. and reinstall windows. You'll have to install eveything again and configure it all again but you'll be starting from scratch.
Hi,
restart becuase the game setup still runing in backround
for the error abort or ignor hit ignor so no need to replace the new one this because you already have the latest one
try to install the game again or remove it and restart if you cant try from safe mode
after you finish go to windows update and better if you can make a full scan

my suggestion is this : test your system and devices !
your best bet is to download the ubcd, it contains tests for your system.
i recommend these :
ram : use memtest86+ and let it run for 3 passes - must be error free
disk use the manufacturers utilities
you can also use global tests, like tufftest lite or burnin test
Ultimate boot cd     http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/download.html
BurninTest :  http://www.passmark.com/download/index.htm
Tufftest lite :   www.tufftest.com/tt01-lite.htm

check also your temperatures : cpu, motherboard, video card in the bios, or use speedfan :
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
if they are too high, check if all fans run normally, and the heatsink is fully seated on the CPU
Normally random restarts are caused by the processor becoming too hot. Try opening the case and putting a fan next to it to keep it cool and see if it continues to give you grief. I recently had a problem like yours, it just gradually got worse and worse, to the point when I couldn't even boot in safe mode. I took my machine to a hardware technician i know, he replaced the CPU and it works fine now.

The USB ports flickering on and off and complete randomness of error messages suggest a motherboard problem, but it could just be the CPU. Either way, as nobus suggests, run a hardware scan on ALL hardware. Memory, motherboard and CPU are the main ones to check. I used to use PCCheck which did everything you could need, but i cant seem to find anywhere to download it from, so heres a few more to add to nobus's list:

JMRFan4Life  go to control panel adminitrative tools  event viewer applications and check what windows is reporting in errors.
There is a white icon on the right of one these error display panel when you open one, click on that will copy this error if you could  paste it back here with event id number.

With Civ4 have you had problems running it from the start?
I have Civ4 and found my original problem was how I installed it.
You have to basically stop everything to install it. Your internet because you have close the AV any firewalls scanning programs.
As much as possible.

Go to start run type in dxdiag press enter note what version of directx you have the latest is 9c.
Then run all the tests, may as well. Especially the display.

But I do believe your hdd is in trouble with what you have pointed out in your comments.
Either that or thermal jel is nearly dried out on the processor chip. There must be a conductor between the procesor and the heatsink or it begins to overheat and will fry.
Take the sidecase off your desktop, it is a desktop or laptop? well if a desktop get a torch and have a look at the capicitors on the mainboard near the heatsink and fan any split or swollen?
what to look for>>
http://www.trendit.co.za/capacitor.htm
How much dust.
Check the thermal jel between the heatsink and processor
take out the ram and reseat it.
How old is everything??

run a hdd diagnostic for your brand hdd.
    fujitsu
    http://www.fcpa.fujitsu.com/download/hard-drives/#diagnostic

    IBM and Hitachi
    http://www.hgst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT

    Maxtor/Quantum
    http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/products/index.htm

    Samsung
    http://www.samsungelectronics.com/hdd/support/utilities/utilities_index.html

    Seagate
    http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/index.html

    Western Digital
    http://support.wdc.com/download/

When this starts it is time to consider the age of everything. Start to backup.
If you bougyt a package then when one goes pretty much all goes, starting with the mainboard which has> ram/ procesor chip/modem/audio << in one

hdd have a life around 3 year.
clean install recomended once a year as the regestry gets bogged down.
Ram to be checked every 6 months.
dust cleanout once a month.
updates everyday
defrag and chkdsk often defrag at least once a week
disck cleanup and spyware checks everyday.

Ok a few bits of background on my pc.

just built it two months ago.  everything new. 4gb ram, 500 gb hdd, pentium D 3.2 ghz processor.  processor temp in bios said about 85 degreees C. i will run some of the tests and get back to you guys
>>   85 degreees C   <<  much too hot : look here :
http://www.heatsink-guide.com/content.php?content=maxtemp.shtml
ok what do u suggest get a better cpu fan, should i add thermal grease(howmuch of a layer is neccessary),

i got the game reinstalled without a probelm this time.

im gonna run more checks
"...should i add thermal grease..."  Whoa...does that mean you didn't use any to begin with?  If that is the case you are lucky not to have damaged your CPU.

Instructions on how to apply thermal paste:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/Hardware-Guides/Applying-Thermal-Paste/

Thermal transfer paste will greatly increase the speed at which heat is disipated from your processor, and hopefully mean that your pc will stop spontaneously rebooting...
i worded that wrong
i put grease on when i installed the fan i was asking if i needed to add more becasue it wasn't enough ir it wore out
OK. Paste or not, 85 degrees C is too hot...is this the CPU temp when idling, or just after a reboot, or when stressed?
Hi all what have I missed?
no it only requires a small layer of grease.
What is next to the processor? Any video cards?
Take off the side case and leave it a bit open or stick a fan on.
4gb ram, 500 gb hdd<<wow how did you get a 500 gig hdd run in windowsxp?
Any partitions on this hdd?
What is the voltage of the PSU?

Did you uninstall civ4 and re-install without the programs and this solved that part?
Its a WD Caviar SE 16 500 gb hdd sata
i got it partitioned at 60gb for windows and the rest where i throw media and stuff into
i have a 500 watt powersupply
You mention you tried a re-install? Is this an OEM version of xp and did it come with sp2 or have you upgraded to sp2 since?
if so you really cant perform a re-install or repair with an updated version of the cd your own, uninstall sp2 from add remove programs.
JMRFan4Life  check the events in control panel administraive tools event viewer applications, can you copy some and post back here, clicking on the white icon next to a panel of one teh errors will copy it.
These id numbers and events are pretty handy.
What directx version are you running?
it is a large hdd defragging it often will be necesary.

if you want a better cooling fan, take a zalman (best ones) like the CNPS9500 AT :

This is related to a graphics card. Is your graphics  on board the mainboard?
Maybe your using a standard graphics card? No fan?
You need a high end video card to play games like Civ4.
Your card may just not have what it takes.
Have you  done the directx tests as I suggested earlier?
Could show some results immediately if it a video card problem.
it only reboots during game p0lay or at any other time?

i have a good graphics card installed im pretty sure civ 4 isn't the problem my computer is now infested with crap and it only gets worse everytime i restart.

Now i spent the last hour trying to install windows again.  windows isn't finding a mass media device because its a sata . with a sata hard drive i need to load the driver before windows can recognize it but when i press f6 i am getting no response from the system and it keeps running the setup but fails without being able to recognize the hdd.

please help
oh dear you went ahead of us JMRFan4Life , what kind of infested with crap?
Performing a repair with malare if thyat is is teyh crap will not remove the malware.
Is this a Laptop desktop?
Windows xp what version pro or home sp1 or sp2.
If you attempt a repair with xp home OEM could be a problem, if this is a laptop what brand as they have a recovery partition.

I need this info.
You may have to slave this hdd now so that you can run some scans.
How are yu accessing the internet? on another machine? desktop or laptop?

perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Here is some extra help illustrating the steps look below the typing.

if you can access another pc  use the cdrom to slave the hdd to.If it is desktop.
Laptops you can use a 3.5 or 2.5 ide to connect them, or an external enclosure.
laptop to hdd ide cable
http://www.bay-wolf.com/hddadapter.htm

http://www.mikeshardware.com/howtos/laptop_hd_upgrade/
Desktop
You will have to remove your hdd which is easy, you'll need a screw driver to take off the side case un-power it first pull out the power plug unscrew the side case ,  unscrew the screws on your hdd,  using flat nosed pliers pull out the one ide ribbon and the white power connector,
look at the rear of the hdd see the pin using tweezers move it to slave.
There is a diagram on top of the hdd.
on the other computer unpower it.
Now unplug the cdrom ide ribbon and power plug these into your hdd, then just sit the hdd on top of the tower.
power in again and reboot.
Its a bit slower wait once the desktop loads windows will find new hardware, your hdd now instead of the cdrom drive.
Because it’s no longer using windows it is pretty safe just don’t touch anything inside this new d drive until you have scanned it free of malware.
download a few scanners  or simply run trend and include this hdd.

it will show what infections and what action to repair and fix tools.

what is the exact model of the sata hdd?
put the drivers on a floppy first insert the floppy and the xpcd, set the boot order to cd first then hdd floppy
do you have sp2 onboard, if you wish our help to work with you slow down and  please post your responses and what steps you have taken, I have already provided the facts about sp2 you cannot run a repair with sp2 onboard unless the xpcd supports the installed operating system.
But rather you uninstall xpsp2 from add remove programs fist then re-install it it constittes a repair if the operating is an updated version to sp2.
If you have a full xpsp2 cd then use the repair option.
Rebooting can be mismatched hardware or you are using a copy of xp that is not yours. The xp must match the mainboard it was originally installed on OEM will not install any other system it is bound to a new system one system only.

Your systrem was starting to play up we have eliminate the hardware problems first before repairing xp, also it pays remove any usb devices. Cards  wireless etc as much as possbile so that only generic items will be installed. Not all device drivers are on the xpcd.

ok lets play catch up here so we are on the same page.

i currently have a WD Caviar SE 16 500GB SATA Hard Drive

I am running an authentic version of Windows xp with sp2 on a desktop.

i deleted the old partition and tried to do a fresh install of windows.

i need to load the driver with a floppy which i have.  When prompted when the blue screen first appears i tried to press f6 to load the raid driver.

however i got no response when it didn find any other mass storage device i was then able to load the driver and continue setup.

i deleted all old partitions and started to install fresh.

Setup was unable to copy certain files and so i skipped the files and continued however i still ran into more problems and setup unexpectedly shutdown and restarted

i was able to start windows but alerted me there were serious errors that windows recovered from and soon.

i have nothing installed at the moment on the hard drive and the windows setup cd keeps sayings its unable to copy certain files

The bios detect the hdd , it is spported by my mainboard, this was the hdd i did the original install on about 2 months ago no real issues other than a bunk bootdisk provided by intel so i had to create a new one i can try and access recovery console and run chkdsk from dos

i also saw a second set of unusued space that was never there before its about 1904 mb seperate from my unused hdd space that was never there when i did the original install and the xp disk worked fine without a problem
forget about the other space that was prob jjust my flash drive i forgot i had in there

running chdsk /r now
CHeckdisk finished said it found and fixed one or more errors should i try to reinstall now
another note when setup was formatting the drive i don't think it formatted properly because i know for a fact the last time i intalled the format took awhile to do
howerver it just ran through that step in about 30 seconds which can't be right so i don't think it formatted properly and that could be a problem aswell
morning JMRFan4Life  I can imagine that a hdd this size would take a while to chksk.
Have you ever considered hdd this size of course will house a ton of stuff but what happens if the hdd dies?
 Do you back up often?

You mention bluetooth mouse and keyboard << do you have any generic mouse and keyboard you could use during windows install?
Are these wireless?
Unplug any usb devices during setup please.
Where possible use generic hardware and native components so that any drivers required will be allocated on the xpcd.

i have a regular mouse and keyboard to use

is it ok to leave the graphics card in

im gonna purchase another drive soon to backup all my work

hey chkdsk fininshed i started install and this time it seems to actually be formatting properly so maybe it will work this time formtting should take another hour about so ill check in again then
what is the graphics card? if you have an onboard would be better as well for the card this way you install it clean.
I have nvidia GT6600 these do require to be installed outside of the operating system drivers not on xpcd
mines nvidia 7600
cool  lol. is this a dsktop?
okay I think you should remove the card but only if you have an onboard.
Do you have the mainboard cd? Once windows is installed please dont have internet access until you have a good up to date AV installed.
Also run your mainboad cd to install all the necessary drivers.
Install office and such otherwise the audio might not install properly.
install java flash check yoru directx is 9c get everything up to date.

Then connect to the internet run the updates and patch everything.
activate your windows
Do you have an xpcd with sp2?
You'll need sp2 for the usb2 support.

Once it is all up to date then follow the guide for your nvidia card
install the drivers first off the setup disc.
 shutdown move your monitor over
get the latest drivers here
http://www.nvidia.com/page/go_7600.html

I just thought of one thing your power supply unit how many watts?
My card needs to plug directly into the psu, so had to upgrade my power supply unit  the other could not support the extra power load so now have 480 watts.
But I have 3 hdd
2 cards  nvidia and one being a video capture as well.
2 roms
network card

hey i installed windows putting av on it now and installing the drivers

when i installed setup stopped and said failed to copy certain files which i skipped over and continued install how or is that gonna effect the install.

heres the file that did't copy on theblue screen :  tourW. (lost the extension)

hers the files that failed to be copied during the windows setup process:

sapi.cp_
avwav.dl_
bckg.ch_

srry its a 500watt powersupply

also my computer just crashed while trying to install an av which i had to take from google pack because i don't have a version on cd.
its seems like the problem wasn't fixed whats the next step to take in the mean time ill keep installing drivers
No worries with power or ram so all good to go there.
Is this an OEM version of xpcd?
did you slipstream it or create this cd? borrowed it
sorry if i ask a lot of questions it helps to be clear.
Have you had any other operating systems on this hdd?
Linux?

at a guess looking at this>sapi.cp_ some kind of  speech service control panel
Win32 Speech API (SAPI)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAPI
avwav.dl_ could be there is no audio drivers installed yet check your device manager in the VIEW show hidden devices.

usually the system board cd has all the drivers.
dont know what this> bckg.ch_ background channel??

When you formatted it did you format the entire hdd first then re-create a new partition, was it ntfs?
did you use the quick format option this can cause problems.

i don't believe its an oem version of windows i got it as a student at school

i just formatted the drive as 1 partition and i used ntfs not the quick version

havn't put any other os on it at all
Is the xpcd scratched?
How familiar are you with operating systems?
Who gave it to you? or do you mean the computer?
ok let me explain a bit, oem stands for orignal equipment manufacture.
Computers bought as a package have these xp discs, and they can only be used on one computer once installed  are married to that mainboard.
If you start adding and changing any hardware it usually voids this oem liscense.
Did you have any problems activating it or entering the xp key?
This operating system you installed in a separate partition with all your games and stuff on the other 400 gig or so size??
When you formatted did you just format this partition? or the entire drive?
have you installed this cd before on any other hdd?

the reason I am mentioning these even though you maybe wondering it is not off subject really.
Microsoft is cracking down on what it terms is illegal operating system regardless if they are legal and the innocent owner just changed the hdd or added some ram or a network video card etc.
With OEM this wil change the regestered image that belongs to that xpcd.
In June this year there was a lot of updates one included the WGA if this was not installed there seems to be windows problems after.
You need xpsp2 now as well as the support ended as of the 10th October.
Your hdd is huge, and you have already mentioned that you were getting chkdsk and lots of errors windows was shutting down
so I think you must format the entire hdd.
create a few partitions.
But if any of these partitons have a bad or dirty bit then the operating system wll have problems.

Have you looked on the mainboard using a torch for any swollen or split capacitiors?
http://www.trendit.co.za/capacitor.htm

Have a look thru this guide
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

understand and fine

i got the windows xp cd directly from the school computer store they sell students a version for 5 bucks it comes with sp2 it looks like the version of xp you'll see if say a company distributes all microsoft software in a huge bundel.  but the product key works fine.

i already decided to wipe the whole drive and start fresh which is what i did.

i put my music and stuff on cd's and my flash drive

i have installed the cd on a ide hard drive before becasue i didn't know about setting up sata hdd at the time so when i built the pc i put it on that first then this one but it loaded and worked fine on here for about 60 days

i already checked for swolen applicators and found none
I keep getting unexpexted errors and windows restarts itself
right thanks well it looks like your good to go. As you can see the overall situation  I'll just wait till you fnd some problems.
This xpcd is called a corperate issue you may still have some issues with it if it  outdated.

Even corperate issues have to buy upgraded versions. Or re-purchase a new liscence.
Just so you aware of this. :)
I had a corperate version and suddenly a small yellow triangle appeared a few months ago stating my windows was illegal lol.
Well I decided to go clean too and bought a new hdd new windows. It was a good idea anyway as I had sp1 with sp2 as a upgrade cd now I have a full version.

thanks for your time and efforts
your welcome hope it all works out
cheers
