After the death of a linksys router it was replaced with a new Linksys WRT54GL. after proper configuration the router would connect properly through the ADSL modem  but the internet did no work and pinging test showed that that packets were sent but nor received from the outside.
Any clues on what to search for   next

Did it get a valid public IP on the WAN side? (or did you input the correct static IP info?)
Sometimes those ADSL routers are a pain when you switch your MAC on the LAN port.  I know in the past I've had to let them sit off for a couple hours before they will assign any IPs to the new MAC address.

There was a valid adress  The Router was reset to factory  information  reentered  and it seemed to solve the problem what is puzzling is that there did not seem to be any differences between the confoguration that did not work (kept print out) and the configuration that worked.
