You can do it in 2003 too, it's just a little trickier.

Dim k As RegistryKey = Registry.CurrentUser
k = k.OpenSubKey("Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders")
Dim path As String = k.GetValue("Desktop").ToString()
