Notepad loading takes forever

For a few months now, whenever I double-click on a .txt file (or .log or any file that is registered to be opened by notepad.exe) it take about 20sec for the file to open. If I double-click on notepad.ext itself, it opens instantaneously. Tools|Folder Options|File Types looks like it's supposed to for TXT, etc.

Anybody have any ideas on why this is happening--and how to fix it?

Thanks. I'll check out the suggestions in the link you sent when I have a moment.
In the meantime, "Automatically search..." is already deselected, and the registry entry you gave does not exist on my system.

I d/l'd and installed ethereal, and since running it just one time there have been no further delays in opening notepad! This apparent fix has survived several reboots.

I'll give it another week or so before closing this question.

The slow opening is now quite intermittent, and once opened there is no recurrence of the delay for some time. I've not identified a pattern, and troubleshooting is rather difficult, since the problem is not consistently repeatable. Probably not worth the effort. Unless you have some other suggestions, I will just close this.
