system freeze

When I use Save As ,my system freezes I give it a while minute ot two.stays frozen so have to go to Start /restart etc.to get system up and running untill the Save As is selected,back to square one.all other files options o.k

Sounds like corrupted system files.  Try running system file checker:
Start - run - "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes)  Have your OS disc handy - if any system files are compromised it will ask for the disc to replace them.  I am assuming you are running Win XP...

Hi. done as suggested loaded the XP Pro service pac 2 disk,all thats happening is the Windows File Protection window sits on desktop vryfying.No movement .but if I go to close ,gives me option to close or not.other than that .nothing.it has been sitting there for 10 minutes,but it has not frozen,am i impatient,how long should this stage take,, cheers

It can take awhile...put your cursor on the blue progress bar and check if it moves...also check the CD drive - if the green LED flickers occasionally, it means that the file checker is pulling off files to load...
