No such thing as a "Novell server". There is a company named "Novell", and it makes a number of products, including "SUSE Linux Enterprise Server", "GroupWise", "Open Enterprise Server" and "NetWare", to name a few. You have a "NetWare server".

It does look like there is an update out for the NetWare version of NetShield --> http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/engines.asp?region=us&segment=enterprise
BTW, I can't find "McAfee v8.0i" for NetWare. Seems their current product version for NetWare is NetShield v4.6, and indeed you have NETSHLD.NLM v4.63.05. I'm confused by your "8.0i" statement.
I also note the 3 McAfee NLMs you have loaded:

NETSHLD.NLM      McAfee NetShield for NetWare
  Version 4.63.05   July 31, 2006
MCSCAN32.NLM     McAfee Anti-Virus Engine
  Version 51.00   August 15, 2006
NAIREG.NLM
  Version 4.63.05   July 31, 2006

Two are dated in July, one in August. This may be appropriate, I'm not sufficiently familiar with McAfee to say, but I recommend that you check that these module versions are compatible amongst each other.

My humble apologiies. I konow better, just a MAJOR brain fart! ;-D Mea Culpa.

Yes, the netshield component of Mcafee 8.0i is compatible with Netware 6.0, or so they claim.
And yes the problem goes away if I unload netshield. But the I'm afraid of viruses. Not so much in the NOS, but in the files stored n this server.

If you'll notice, there are a fair amount of services commented out of the autoexec.ncf. Thats because I'm not smart enough to configure them or unload them. I thought oerhaps it was sometthing there.

I'll contact Mcafee and see if we can fix it that way

Thanks for the quick response
Separate from your issue, I note that you have both NetWare's preferred TCP/IP protocol and also IPX loaded on the server. While this is OK, I wonder if you really need IPX? After all, NetWare itself hasn't needed IPX since 1998 and v5.0, and here it is almost 2007. Is IPX support something you actually need, or did someone just load it?

If it's not needed, you can free up some server resources (RAM mostly) by not bothering with IPX. NetWare v5.0 and later actually prefers TCP/IP.

I also note in passing that NetWare v6.0 has been EOLed and is no longer supported. The current version in NetWare v6.5, and NetWare itself has been superceded by Open Enterprise Server (which, among many other things, offers you the choice of a Linux *or* a NetWare kernel).

The 8.0i is the management suite, again my mistake. I downloaded the netshield update, and will install it today.

I HATE trying to do something when I don't know what to do!!
"....there are a fair amount of services commented out of the autoexec.ncf. Thats because I'm not smart enough to configure them or unload them...."

One of my "pet peeves" wih Novell is the lousy job they do of documenting their own AUTOEXEC.NCF files. Of course, more high-priced "consultants" equally fail to document a darn thing they do.

Allow me to suggest this re-written one with some comments inside of it:

Anything that I commented out is either not used or I didn't know how to configure it.
Well, hopefully I've provided some information that'll help you understand it.
I'll re-iterate what looks oddball:

1) You have Bindery Emulation enabled. Unless you have something on your network that actually needs Bindery Emulation, I suggest you disable it (comment out the line indicated)

2) If you don't need Bindery Emulation, then you probably don't need IPX either. You'd remove IPX support using the command --> LOAD INETCFG.NLM
and then browsing thru the menus and finding the place to remove IPX support

3) You load NDS iMonitor (NDSIMON.NLM) but not the NetWare Remote Manager (NoRM, PORTAL.NLM) or the custom HTTP stack that both NoRM and iMonitor require (HTTPSTK.NLM).

4) You load both RCONAG6 (the IP-based version of RCONSOLE) and AdRem's AFREECON.NLM RCONSOLE/RCONAG6 replacement). Load one or the other, not both, or provide remote console access through NoRM.

5) There's an unfamiliar (to me) "s" parameter on the load of NICISDI.XLM

6) The tuning statement for Small ECBs has a typo that renders it useless

7) You don't load Secure Authentication Services

8) You don't load any Storage Management Services (SMS) support or Target Services Agents (TSAs) like TSAFS.NLM or TSANDS.NLM - as a result, you have no *effective* server-based backup capability or the ability to back up eDirectory
Have you considered a training course or making use of Novell's extensive documentation library?

The NetWare v6.0 documentation library is freely available (and downloadable) at --> http://www.novell.com/documentation/nw6p/index.html

Point taken. I'll implement the changes you mentioned the first chance I have to restart my server, probably tonite. I freely admit that I don't have a clue about what most of the things in the autoexec.ncf do

as far as the docs, it appears they were written for geeks by geeks. I understand some of it, but not nearly what I'd like to. I do have an online course for NW 5.0, but it would cost the school too much to upgrade it :-(

I have learned a lot in the last year or so, so maybe I'll figure out how to read geek! :- ) I won't give up though. If I can learn linux, we might be able to ug to the latest and greatest.

I know guys like me are a pain, but I really have learned a lot from you and the Exchange, perhaps more than I'm aware of.

Your comments have truly been helpful.
Thank you much!!
Yeah, sometimes I have to scratch my head and wonder what some statement does. Which is why I tend to extensively document my own AUTOEXEC.NCF files (and STARTUP.NCF, for that matter) - once I figger something out, if I document it, I don't have to re-remember it in 6 months when I need to look at AUTOXEC.NCF again.

I've been griping at Novell for years about their lousy default documentation in some of these files - it's endemic across the IT industry and across platforms. Look at the average *NIX vendor's sendmail.mc, for instance. Inexcuseable.

Open Enterprise Server (OES) offers you a *choice* of Linux or NetWare kernels. You can even run both. Point being is that you don't have to switch cold-turkey.

I REALLY hope erate comes thru this time. All my "servers" are just about museum pieces. I want the latest and greatest from Novell, some servers with horsepower, and a tape library to back it all up.

Does the linux kernel support usb drives? If it does, that might be the way to go. I've got about 40Gb that I'm scared to death of loosing, and the ONLY way to back it up is the ncopy commnd to another server.
"Does the linux kernel support usb drives?"

Yes, every modern Linux distro I've encountered supports USB drives.
