Hi-
I have a Windows 2000 server running Exchange 2000.  I was testing out an automated NTBackup of the Information Store to make sure it worked properly, and halted it before it completed.  Now when I try to run the backup job on the Information Store, it  stops with an error.  I get the following events in the application log:
Event 214
Information Store (3580) 5bb12c81-e362-4968-9377-0708dee9cd3f: The backup has stopped with error -521.
Event 8012
The 'Microsoft Information Store' returned 'The backup call is out of sequence.
' from a call to 'HrESEBackupOpenFile()' additional data 'D:\Exdb\priv1.edb'
Event 8001
End Backup of 'XXXXXXX\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group'     Verify:  Off         Mode:  Replace       Type:  Normal
Event 8012
The 'Microsoft Information Store' returned 'There is no backup in progress.
' from a call to 'HrESEBackupTruncateLogs()' additional data '-'

Any ideas on what I should try?  The last good backup is a few days old at this point...

G'day mate

Just a thought.  Is NTBACKUP still running?  Take a look in task manager an look for NTBACKUP.  If you see it in there end task.  Then try and run the backup again.  Only other thought is what type of backup are you trying to perform in NTBACKUP? MAke sure it's a FULL backup and not incremental or differential

Hope this help

Unfortunately, it's not still running.  I am trying to run a full backup, though.  My inclination is to restart the Information Store, but I'm worried that I won't be able to restart it.
Thanks

Are you getting any IS error in event log other than the failures from NTBACKUP?

To be on the safe side I'd exmerge all the mailboxes out of the IS.  Exmerge is free MS tool for dumping user folders out into PST.  Lets you sleep better at night knowing the mail/calendars etc is accessible outside the IS.

have a read here

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174197

I'd suggest you exmerge the data out.  Then try and restart the IS.  It may fix the issue but at least you have all the data accessible should the worst hapen

Hi-

I ran exmerge to backup the mailboxes, and then restarted the IS - no luck, same error.  I ran eseutil /g and eseutil /d, as well, but that hasn't helped either.  I'm getting the feeling that I can either do offline backups, or rebuild the IS.

Any other possibilities?

Thanks for your help,
Mike

To be honest mate not from me.  I did a google for you and didn't find much about that error.  I guess theh option you have is shutdown the SMTP so no new mail enters the server.  Run exmerge again to update any new mails that have come in (you can run exmerge as an incremental backup)

Trash the IS and reimport the mailboxes.  The downside to this is you loose the single instance of exchange DB so the IS will be alot bigger if you rebuild from the PST.

That is one option.  What I would personally do is place a pointer question in the Exchange Forum for 20 points with a link to this question.  That will put it at the top of the forum again.  Another expert will then see and take a look in for us.  With any luck you can get Sembee or Redseatechnologies involved and they might be able to save you the agro and fix the issue.  At least in the interim you have a backup of the mail which should let you sleep easier.

Sorry couldn't get it going for you Mike

Just a thought Mike

Are you trying to backup the System State with this IS backup?  I recall that used to fail.  I think the workaround on that one was perform the System state to a file then include that in the backup.

Some thing else I saw while surfing was space on the Exchange server? Are you nearly out of room?

Nope - this is just an IS backup, and there's plenty of space on the disk where both the logs and the edb/stm files are.

I think I'll run the exmerge again tonight, and then run an eseutil /p to see if that fixes the problem...

Another alternative would be to run the exmerge as the backup, and enable circular logging.  The only other thing to do would be to have a regularly scheduled eseutil /k to make sure the database is "clean".   I have a feeling that this problem is less a database issue, and more that a backup switch got flipped and not reset...

I'll set the pointer like you recommend...

Thanks,
Mike

No wories Mike

Just remember to purge the pst backups (delete them) before you run the nightly exmerge backup otherwise you end up with huge PSTs with old mails that users have deleted, appointments that were removed etc.

Good luck Mike

Well, most interesting - I retried the backup again tonight for giggles, and it worked.  The only thing that I could turn up was an event in the Application log saying that exchange had deleted a log file.  Can't remember that I've seen that event before, but...  I'll keep looking to see if I can find a reason behind this...
Thanks for your help robjeeves!
