cannot run automatic update service
Hi,
I've got a Windows XP home SP2 system and cannot turn on automatic updates:
tried the straight forward method via security center : fails
tried via control panel option : I can set automatic updates but I still get the same error message from the bottom right hand of the screen, and it does not update
tried manual update via Microsoft website: fails error 0x80070424, searching Microsoft website for this error code give no info at all.
I've ran Microsoft baseline security analyser and the check for security updates fails with "Cannot load security CAB file"
the last message seems to be giving a pointer to what is wrong but I cannot find a solution anywhere
Cheers
Daniel

try to stop the Automatic Updates service and re start it.
run>services.msc>Automatic Updates, then stop it and restart it , if you get any error please pot it here
make sure that the startup type is set to automatic
run>services.msc>Automatic
make sure that the startup type is set to automatic

Thanks fro your help
I've run sfc.exe /scannow twice and both times the window disappeared after a very long scan without any feedback to me or asking for an install cd.
I had already been playing with changing different settings in auto update with no luck
gvlob put me on the right track regsvr32 wuaueng.dll did the trick and it's now downloading updates.
Thanks everybody for your help and feedback

Glad you got it working!
You will need your Windows CD to complete the check
Then try again.
