Cannot install SBS 2000 Exchange Server on SBS 2000

This regards SBS 2000 that was installed in 2002 on a new Compaq Proliant box.  At the time none of the SBS-specific components (Exchange Server, Back Office Server, etc.) were installed.  Not even the Small Business Server console was installed.

I need to install SBS's Exchange Server 2000.  When I  try to run setup from SBS CD1, installation aborts early on because it "cannot upgrade this version of Small Business Server".  Well, I'm not trying to upgrade the SBS, just install additional components.  Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

The problem is most likely due to the fact that you aborted the original setup and then subsequently applied service packs.  So, in essence you are trying to install additional components on a different version.  You will need to completely flatten and reinstall in order to do this, I'm sorry to say.

Thanks for the idea, but I solved the problem last night.  The MS Support Knowledge Base article 306934
"Error Message: This Version Cannot Upgrade the Installed Version of Microsoft Small Business Server"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306934/en-us

described the problem, and its solution worked perfectly.  I required one change in the Registry, and no reinstallation.

Thanks for the quick feedback.
