'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater.

After method 3 Internet explorer has encountered a prolem and must close. method 2 did not help it was already installed. I even uninstalled ie7 and went back to 6 and it didnt work. possibily i need to get back to 6 and try method 3 again.

Even though you say SharePoint Support is already installed (Method 2 from that article), please try to re-install it.

Also, there is currently a bug within IE7 that doesn't allow Excel Spreadsheets to be imported:  http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/aa740486.aspx

There could be others.

Ah.... sorry, I was thinking you were using Office 2003.  I missed that in your initial question.  Have you reinstalled all service packs?

Can you save a document to the desktop and then open?

Then resave to SharePoint Document Library... and see if that will open from there then.

Ah... that could do the trick since Outlook has handles into Word.
