Hi there,

I have an ASUS P5AD2-E motherboard with onboard Silicon Image Sil3114R SATA Raid controller which has 4 SATA connectors available.  If I have two discs in a mirrored raid using 2 of these SATA ports, can I use the other 2 ports for normal non-RAID SATA HDD connections?

Many thanks.

Yes, just do not choose these extra disks when creating your RAID array. Watch out in your BIOS options for boot order. You will have an entry like SATA Raid, or Raid.. or there may be a bus option for setting the SATA Raid before the single drives.  I am assuming here that you want to install on the OS on the Raid Array. The manual for that motherboard shows two different RAID controllers and does not fully explain the boot options either. Just make sure you look closely at the BIOS settings after you configure your Raid to be sure you are booting off the correct device.
