I know this may seem like an easy task but can you tell how I can work out a users distinguished name e.g. cn= etc.

Many thanks.

A quick way is to use the first script from this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/resources/qanda/oct04/hey1021.mspx

To do it manually, locate the user in Active Directory Users and Computers.  The distinguished name consists of the username (cn=joesmith), any organizational units (ou=sales department), any containers (cn=Users), and the domain name (dc=contoso,dc=com).  Containers are the folder objects in AD Users and Computers which don't have book symbols on them.  Parts of the name are separated by commas.

So if you have a user joesmith in the domain contoso.com who is in the Organizational Unit named Sales Department which is under another Organizational Unit named Cleveland then he would have the following distinguished name:
cn=joesmith,ou=sales department,ou=cleveland,dc=contoso,dc=com.

If the user janejones is just in the Users container then she would have the following distinguished name:
cn=janejones,cn=users,dc=contoso,dc=com.
