question about how an animation was created?

I am a developer, and i'm trying to teach myself flash animation. I am really interested in learning how the animation in the below sites were createded. I went to kirupa.com and www.flashkit.com, and created some flash movies from the examples they provided, but i'm still having trouble figuring out how the below sites were animated. I see lots of motion and shape tweening, masking, and some awesome use of timing. However, i'm sure there is more than that going on under the hood. Is the below animation done with special effects, action script, and Video Editing? Perhaps you all know of other advanced tutorials that teach you how to create effects like the below sites.

In the above site, check out the work samples section, go to med tech, and choose project alvesco video
