Nested Distribution list

What is a good way to unnest distribution lists?
What are good best practice steps to do this.
I have distribution lists within distributions etc.
I am told to unnest them but how do I do this?

More information would be nice.

Are these distribution lists in Outlook or AD?
Most nested lists are just other lists that are members of another list. The only thing you have to do to un-nest them is remove the list from the membership of the list that it is nested in.
