Just bought a new Western Digital Raptor X 150GB Serial ATA hard drive. Acoustic Management is enabled. I want to disable it for increased performance. On my Maxtor drives i used AMSET to disable it but WD doesnt seem to have this tool. I tried systool to disable it but it wont let me. How can i disable it?!

Western Digital does not provide software that will change the Acoustic Management settings on Western Digital hard drives.

If you have an Intel chipset based motherboard listed in Answer ID 1004, you can use a program called the Intel Application Accelerator to change the Acoustic Management settings for our hard drives. This utility can be downloaded and installed from Intel's web site.

knoppix and ubuntu are distros that can be booted by booting to a cd.
Download the live version of the linux distro, either will work, in .iso format
burn the .iso, and boot to that cd.
then you can run hdparm on your /dev/hda /dev/sda whatever that may be.
