Bringing in the GAL from affiliated companies - keeping it clean

I'd like to import the userlist (email/phone #s) from 3 different companies.  I know I can do an export and import with the command line tool. And I can use FTP to move the files around.

I'm just wondering if anyone has a best pratice on keeping my AD / GAL clean with these imported (the 3 other companies = 50X the number of users on my system). I rather get some pointers if anyone has some, then make a mess and have to clean it up.

thanks

Use SimpleSync if you are worried. I personnally use Scripts to do my work.

The problem you will have is that those folks may export computers, admin accounts, and all other kinds of crap you don't want. I clean a lot with regexs making sure that the thing doesn't have "smtp" for instance is the displayfield for instance. Also I only want users that have an email address, a home mailboxserver, not locked out, and is in the users ou.

I've been testing sctripts  they work ok, but I have an issue:

for a few people who exist in the other GALs, they also need full accounts on my system.  when I import them, they get 2 enteries, and users can't send mail to them (even it they hand type the full address).  Is there a way to stop the import function from making the dups?

Also what is this simpleSync?  do you have a link to it?

You need to delete the contact one. Duplicates is one of the sticking points about any GAL replication at the moment. It seems that only if the thing is in the exact same container or OU is there a warning given. Other than that, you don't know it until a user tries to email it. I have been working on a way to avoid that here, but with about 60,000 contacts, anything I do is snail slow.

I wonder if excel script or some grep type tools could be used to remove a 'list' of known duplicates.  Auto would be nice, but even if I maintain a list of manual removals, I'll have to do that.

:) One of the issues is that mail isn't an indexed property in AD (at least here). I have recommended it but the fear is that with so many contacts and users, that the increase in size of AD will overload it. What can you do if you can't change the rules. lol

I may get someone to write a little DB program to do a pre import check, remove the dups from the text file before the import.

I'll talk to my progammer and see what the effort level would be.  I don't think it will be to bad, if I KISS it.

That sounds like an idea I may try too. I have an underused SQL server sitting around.
