Exchange MTA not available

The past weeks I have been busy getting our server (SBS 2003) ready for use. Today I was double checking everything because later this week our ISP will create an MX-record. I want to be absolutely sure that our mail will be handled correctly. I have been testing OWA and Outlook (also with rpc) and this all works fine. Sending mail through our smarthost already works perfectly.
Earlier today I was struggling with mail send by Sharepoint (a notification that an issue was assigned) and that is when I came across the queues of our server. These queues are all 'ready' except the 'Exchange MTA'. When clicking it a message appears: Exchange System Manager failed to retrieve queues for the X400 protocol (error code=0x800706D9). Check the event log and verify that the required services are running.
Can someone tell me if this requires any action? Does it have to run?
