PCG-662R Vaio DVD drive problem

My Sony laptop (PCG505 series) has a Matshita UJDA745 DVD/CD combo drive. The drive plays CD audio disks but will not play DVD disks. Windows XP device manager shows the drive as a DVD/CD but the system CMOS indicates a CDROM, with no other options available. Does this mean that either the motherboard or the BIOS version does not support DVD?

Any information or advice would be much appreciated.

First test it using a bootable DVD and try booting the PC from the DVD. If it boots there is a windows software problem, if it doesn't, the drive might be defective. DVD Drives have 2 lasers, one for the DVD's and the other for the CD's. It happens very often that one of these lasers break, and then you can only use it for either DVD or CD.

If your system can boot a bootable DVD, then do the following. This registry fix is non destructive, and as long as you don't delete anything else there isn't any problem with it:

Start regedit, then look for the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Right click in the upper and lower filter entries in these keys and press delete. Reboot and check if it is OK now.
