applications folder as well as system files are gone

I was trying to install Adobe Photshop Elements 3.o on mac 15" powerbook, the install errored and after that all my applications (word, excel, safari, system profiler, all of them) are gone! I have the data backed up and the data isn't affected, just the applications.  I am on version 10.3.9 1.5 ghz Power PC. 512 ram. this is my mom's machine and it has hardly been used.

What do you mean, "gone"? Do you still have an Applications folder at the root of your hard drive. Are there any applications still in it?

Completely empty! the Applications folder is there, but there is nothing in it, when I click on icons on the dock and question mark appears.  there is not system profiler, or utilites, nothing

That is really bizarre. I have never heard of such a thing. I guess you are going to have to re-install the applications if you don't have them backed up. You might give Adobe a call or e-mail and ask if they are aware of the problem.

Have you tried using Disk Utility to "repair permissions"? Maybe the files are there but the permissions have been changed so you can't view them.
