Have you checked Disk Management to see if it's there and if it has a drive letter installed?  Does your friend use Symantec products like System Works?  That, which includes GoBack, can change the partition type of a disk and make it unreadable on a system without SystemWorks/GoBack.

Three Reasons Why Backup is Strategic

Backup is strategic to your business because your data is strategic to your business. Without backup, your business will fail. This white paper explains why it is vital for you to design and immediately execute a backup strategy to protect 100 percent of your data.

Check it back on your friends machine - showing as unallocated space suggests it's 'forgotten' it's partitioning info which might be cause by unplugging the drive without first 'ejecting' it from the OS

That's why.  You need to install a mac disk emulator program in order to see a mac formatted disk on a pc.  Let us know if you need suggestions on emulators.

Oh, and no, you don't need something to let you run OS-X on a PC.

an error message pops up when it loads and says the disk contains both mac and pc partitions to repair this disk, choose the correct disk type below :
this is supposed to be a mac   or
"     "   "           "   "    "  pc       or
i don't know whether this is supposed to be a mac or pc

if you click cancel no changes will be made. i clicked cancel but the disk didn't show up

so just to be safe whats the right answer

thanks

There are file types that are cross platform, such as mpg and mp3 - they'll work on pc and mac.  The program has seen those files, along side mac type files, and erred on the side of caution when accessing the info.  By hooking the drive up to a PC running XP, without something like MacDrive installed, you've inadvertently altered the drive structure in a very minimal manner.  MacDrive will undo that, but it wants to be sure that it's supposed to restore it to a Mac type file system.

At this point you can either let it repair it and carry on with your intended operations, or return it to the friend so their computer can repair it, then get it back to do what you wanted to do in the first place.

Download a copy of knoppix, burn it to CD or DVD, depending on what version you download, boot your PC with that CD and with the USB disk attached. Now you should be able "mount" the usb drive and your PC drive, then copy the files from the USB drive to the PC's drive.
