NtBackup will not run when computer is locked.

Hi,
I have a mega problem in where i have a Windows 2003 SBS server and i am running ntbackup every night via a scheduled task from a batrch file.

When i am not on this machine i lock the computer at all times.

when i go on to check the backup in the morning i find that the backup did not run and there is a dos screen showing with the ntbackup script in it and the ntbackup.exe process running in the background.

1) If i stay right click the task and select run, while i am logged onto the pc the backup starts and works fine.!!!

2) If i set the scehduled task to start about 2 minutes ahead of now and wait while looking at the screen, the backup starts fine !!!

so,  i thought it was because you needed to be logged on...

i leave the computer un locked over night hopefull that the backup will run and

the same happens with the dos screen showing and the process running....

its like it knows im watching or something and will only start when i am watching the screen, ( sounds stupid but it works every time in this situation)

This computer is in a remote location and i use VNC to access it over a VPN.

I really hope you can help me, many thanks

Did you configure this task manually?  Or did you use the Built-in SBS Backup Wizard?

Also, why do you use VNC when SBS has RDP built-in???

Hi,  i have tried configuring the task manually and setting it using the scheduled task wizard.,  this problem is spooooooooooooo strange, its really stressing me..

we just use vnc cause its there and we use it on clents,  i find it easier to use vnc when there is a couple of us in the office so each of us knows if one of us has been on the server and we can see what is actually going on , on the screen and we can make sure it is locked..

hi,
yeah i have thought of that one, but the console backup will not let you exclude backing up folders that you actually dont need when doing a restore like, docs and sets and fax and inetpub....  is there a way of actually excluding them?
ta

spencer
It'll let you exclude anything you want... unless it's a folder that the system thinks you need in order to restore.  If it truly isn't a folder you need then you can move that folder to another partition and then exclude it.  However, inetpub, for instance, is required to restore your server properly because of IIS's integration into SBS.

thanks, i have ran that last night and it ran ok, well i say ok,  it failed on the verify with the following error:

**Error: The device reported an error on a request to read data from media.**
**Error reported: Hardware failure.**
**There may be a hardware or media problem.**

and also, in the log file it says it backed up "first storage group" fine, taking 2 hours and 1260 directories, etc...

BUT when i go and try to do a test restore and just go and view the first storage group area of the catalogue it says there are no entries been backed up in the first storage group

please help,

this is the final thing now and then the 500 points are yours jeff
I (or, for that matter, any expert answering here at EE) shouldn't get the points until we have found a solution to your question... which I am not convinced has occured yet.

I also think that one of the best ways I can help you at this point is to ask you to please read the "Learn How to Restore the Server" article which is linked inside the Backup section of the Server Management Console.  While this will not directly answer your last comment, it will help you to have a better overview of how backup works.  There is a full document which includes this info and more at http://sbsurl.com/backup.

I recommend this because you are going about managing your server by "trial and error" rather than learning about the proven methods which thousands of people use to properly and successfully manage their Small Business Server.  There is a ton of documentation on SBS... much of it is right there in your server.  Click on the "INFORMATION CENTER" link in the Server Management Console to see it.

It is normal for there not to be any files listed in First Storage Group when you view it in the Backup Utility.  This is because if you only wanted to restore your Exchange Store, you wouldn't do it through NTBackup.  But I am still not able to help you resolve what the problem is because you didn't really provide enough information.  Please post the ENTIRE backup log so that I can see what happened overall.  If you like you can upload it instead to https://filedb.experts-exchange.com/incoming/ee-stuff/1502-hold.txt.

Also, what device are you using to back up to?

thanks jeff,  i think you should get the points because you pointed me in the right direction of sbs backup.

i am aware of how backups and restrores work.  but using the sbs backup is the way forward for us now,  as you know been a techie we always like to go the long way round first

thanks for your help
Well, I guess that's true in the overall sense of your original question, but I just want to be sure that you get this working.  There could be additional reasons that you're having problems, so please post again if you need further info.
