OL97 Quit working - Cannot reinstall properly

Oulook 97 quit working on one PC. I uninstalled and reinstalled it, but i keep getting error messages that the MAPI32.DLL is corupt or the wrong version. I have renamed it and gone to the CD with the installation and copied the file, but continually get the same message. I have also uninstalled and installed with a different CD, getting the same message regarding MAPI32.DLL. However, in both cases the portion of the message referring to MAPI32.DLL is preceded by "The extension "(extension varies)" has been disabled." The extension varies. In one case I was able to find it in the registry and deleted it. In another case I was not able to find the extension in the registry. I cannot open Outlook at all, so cannot change the profile. There must be something that does not uninstall and causes problems when I reinstall Outlook. Is that possible? Is there a method of manualy uninstalling all aspects of Outlook? I could not find it through Google.
How do you suggest that I proceed? Thanks, in advance.
