High Definition file H.264 to be edited?

Hello !

I am planning to buy an HD camera from Sony, the HDR-SR1 and this stores the files at .m2ts files.
I have searched a little at the i-net and until now I have found out that these files can not be edited with any known software at any platform pc or mac.
Does anyone here know any application that can edit such files of the AVCHD format? (this camera does not shoot in HDV format).
I know that what can be done now is to downconvert the files to SD quality and edit and write to DVDs but for HD quality to wait until some software company releases some solution.

Thanks in advance.

If you choose this, you'll be stuck with limited editing, or what you have just mentioned "downconvert"...get an HDV camera that you can work NOW or wait till Sony Vegas can support it's own format.

After reading more on various forums and after considering your suggestion irwinpks, I decide to stick with the known way, the HDV format and the well established HC3 High definition camera.
The key factor here is that I want now to shoot a trip to an exotic island in High Definition, so the HDV format is the most convenient way.

Thanks for your suggestion, which I accept as a solution.
Kindest regards.
