Internet Explorer

For some reason something changed in my settings somewhere and I can not figure out what happened. I am using I.E. 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp.060315-1524  Update Version SP2.

When I go to a particular web page it previously prompted me to save or open the textfile it was going to download.  Instead now it just opens up in the IE window automically without even asking me.  How do I change this?

1. Go to Start | Run.
2. Type "Regedit" (without the quotes)
3. On the left-hand side, expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt
4. Double-click "Content Type" on the right-hand side.
5. Delete the "text/plain" value entry and click "OK"

The next time you click a hyperlink that points to a text file, it should open in Notepad instead of Internet Explorer.

After doing quite a bit of research, this is by design in Internet Explorer.  You can either have it display the text file in Internet Explorer (default) or have it display in a text editor, like Notepad (per my above comment).

Conversely, the person that created the link can code it in such a way that Internet Explorer will prompt to Save or Open.  Aside from that, I haven't found any way to change it on the workstation directly.
