hi guys be hurry ....

i have a very strange problem ... i m going to give you all the info at once ....
i have a cisco Switch with 12 Giga Ports in which 7 i am using GBics from Cisco called 1000base SX ... and now as it does not have any Ethernet 100 base T port ... and ny server needs to connect with that ... i have used a Fiber to Ethernet Convertor with one Face to plug into the Gbic Port of Switch and have RJ 45 Connector ....and now what happens is that I HAVE CONNECTED IT ON PORT 12 .....

NOW PLZ HAVE A LOOK ON IT ....

#module 2 : 12-port 1000BaseX Ethernet
set module name    2
set module enable  2
set vlan 1    2/1-12
set port channel 2/1-4 off
set port channel 2/5-8 off
set port channel 2/9-12 off
set port channel 2/1-4 auto
set port channel 2/5-8 auto
set port channel 2/9-12 auto
set port enable     2/1-12
set port level      2/1-12  normal
set port duplex     2/1-12  full
set port trap       2/1-12  disable
set port name       2/1-12
set port security   2/1-12  disable
set port membership 2/1-12  static
set port protocol 2/1-12 ip on
set port protocol 2/1-12 ipx auto
set port negotiation 2/1-12 enable
set port flowcontrol send    2/1-12 desired
set port flowcontrol receive 2/1-12 off

AND ALSO

IT shows port 12 status not connected ...and what happen is that .... i can ping my IP address ... i mean from Server i can ping mine but does not ping others ....

Only thing i have understood is that Convertor is not a Cisco Based and may not be compatible with the Swith BUT IT SHOULD BE AS ITS STANDARD PRODUCT AND WORKING INTO MARKET .....
but in conf it shows me that its a 1000 base T  .... but do not connect ....

here is running conf of switch ....
IF ANY GUY CAN SUGGEST ME THAT I CAN ENABLE MY PORT AND MAKE IT RUN

HERE YOU GO

sh conf

To save the currently running configuration it should be:

   write

or

   write mem

I'll need to study the config some more.

Nothing yet on the config, but Cicso does make a GBIC that support CAT5.  WSG5483

I would suggest that you code the speed for port 12 to 100 Mbps.  I can't where you are setting the speed, so you are probally attempting to negotigate it. Speed and duplex negotiation does not always work.

Based on your other commands it should be something like:

     set port speed 2/12 100

and well not taking the commands Write ... or Wr mem....
also also if these Kind of switches also to show config# .... rather than ....

Console> (enable)

This ... still i have broken its password ... i have not reloaded that ...perhaps thats the reason ...

If you show the status of the port what does it show?

You may want to unplug the GBIC and plug it back  in and then check the log for any errors.

We tried a SPF module once that the vendor said would work on in a Cisco box, but it got an error and would not come active.  After discussing it with the vendor he mis-understood our question "Will it work IN a Cisco xxxx?" and thought we meant "Will it work WITH a Cisco xxxx?"  He thought we had one of their switches and that we were going to use it in his switch and connect his switch to the Cisco switch.

What is the brand and model GBIC that you are trying to use.

Well To be Frank . this is the problem of our client ...and we are athorize to get into the server room to access the switch ... as i will have to ask them again for that...they have some security issues ...and its adjusted in that kind of a way that  i am unable to find telnet because i will have to switch over to the Some server who is plugged into the switch ...anyway ...
Your this defination of Vendor seems me quite healthy ....Let me see what they says ... and also its not a GBIC ...but a Converter  Gbic to Ethernet ....just like

WSG5483..... any thing better you can all tell me ....

Can you recall your memory that when you connected that GBic into Cisco Switch ....
what kind of messages.... it was prompting ?????

GBIC stands for gigabit interface converter, a WS5483 is a GBIC.  All GBIC's are converters.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps872/products_data_sheet09186a008014cb5e.html

If their "convert" plugs directly into the switch it is a GBIC also, it just may not be from Cisco.  I have not looked really hard, but I did not know that there were other vendors that made GBIC's for Cisco devices.  Do you know the vendor and model of the converter they are trying to use?

We were receiving an error that said something like "invalid checksum on interface x/y".

If you can't get to the switch in someway then they need to do the test and provide you with the log.
