Has anyone used STAF?
What are its advantages and dis-advantages over any other Automation Framework?

Which Automation software would you recommend and why?

It is probably matter of taste, of the company policy, of how independent on some vendor you want to be, of what experience you can use in another environment (cross-platform and also cross-language).

I have personally chosen the CppUnit (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cppunit). It is widely accepted and used system based on the original idea from JUnit (Java). The framework even probably gave the name to "unit tests". Building the tests is similar in Java, in C++, in Python and probably also in other languages. If it happens and you will find it restricting your needs, you will probably know a lot about the testing frameworks and you will be able to choose better framework in future. But the CppUnit simply cannot be bad choice.

Sorry, the STAF is intended for a different level of testing, not for the unit tests. It seems to be unrelated (orthogonal) to unit-test framworks like CppUnit.

I am quite surprised that no one else responded to this question.
