MMC cannot open WINS Management Console

Hi,

We're experiencing a problem on a number of our servers (all Windows Server 2003 SP1 machines) wherein if you try to open the WINS Management Console (through Start > Programs > Administration Tools, or directly typing winsmgmt.msc from a command prompt) you receive the following error:-

"MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\winsmgmt.msc

This may be because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file."

Looking in C:\WINDOWS\system32 - the file winsmgmt.msc does exist, and Administrators have modify permissions to it. We are logged on as Domain Admin accounts when we try to run the WINS MMC.

Microsoft Windows Administration Tools for Windows Server 2003 SP1 has been re-installed on all the affected servers, but the problem persists.

The WINS MMC still works from our Admin PC's (Windows XP SP2) so we are able to access WINS - but it's a frustration to not be able to use the WINS MMC when logged onto a server!

I can't find any mention of this error on the MS KB, and Googling on it produces the rare result of no-one else experiencing this issue!

Can anyone shed any light on what might have happened, and how to go about fixing it?

Regards,

Richard Tubb.

What happens if you try and manually create your own WINS MMC?  Does that work.

Hi Pber,

You know - that thought never even occurred to me. :-)

Thankyou! 've just run MMC.exe, added WINS as a Snap-In - and it works just fine!

I'll therefore remove the WINS Admin Tool and replace it with this custom MMC.

Appreciate the help, thankyou!
