hp media center pc 873n

one of my clients has a hp media center pc 873n. yetserday he called me because it would not boot up and it was show ing an error, so i went and saw that the pc was halting saying, "SYSTEM FAN FAILURE, have your system serviced soon. This pc will reboot in 5 seconds." It would then shut off completely. the motor on the system fan was fried so i replaced the fan and the system is still generating the same error. I went into the bios and looked to see if i could tell it to not halt on any errors or even ignore the fans but that is not an option in this bios. i did notice that it was not even detecting the new fan. the old fan connected via one 3 pin wire to motherboard. the new one connects with a molex and a 3pin connector with only one wire in it. i can bypass the error by pressing F2 and Delete alternating until the system beeps on bootup and can get around the problem but i would like to get the error to go away and not just bypass it.
1. Is this new fan not compatible? Is that even possible?
2. Do i need to reset the bios with the jumper? help!
any ideas

If you can't change the BIOS setting or it isn't available, get a proper 3-wire fan that reports the fan rpm.  Fans don't cost a lot, and you can't substitute a 2-wire fan if the system expects to detect it spinning.
