error e23 on scanjet 5590

I have a scanjet 5590 by HP that gets a e23 on the display.  When this happens it locks up and has to be unplugged to reset.  It is now happening several times a day.  I have not been able to find out what this error means.  HP has also been no help.

I have googled and done several other searches with no luck.

Any thoughts?

Error 23 is a failure error on the scanner bulb circuit, unfortunately this could be anything from a bulb problem to a fault in the circuit board or even the USB cable.  The firmware is reporting a problem with warming the bulb ahead of the scan.

HP are well aware of the issue so not sure why you are having difficulties with them

If it's still under warranty get it replaced.

I did a search and found this same info (I was searching for error 23 not blinking 23 - hp should address this!)

I did talk to a HP rep and was told that this error means that my java (!!) is not installed correctly and there is nothing wrong with the scanner - also suggested that I reinstall windows and that could take care of the problem.  They needed a credit card and $50.00 to answer this question (it is out of warranty).  What a crock!

On a further note, I do have the case number, I am considering emailing HP just to let them know how the problem was handled.  I know I would like to be told if I was HP and one of my techs was handing out this type of incorrect advice.
