What can I do to make my 4 grandmother's sites more SEO friendly?:

www.yodeling-music.com
www.bearface-dodge.com
www.intelligentdesigner-book.com
www.journey-book.com

I do realize that they all need to be validated.

Obviously, good link building is an ongoing consideration, but here are some basic on-page optimization notes to consider:

- you need a character encoding and language declaration on each page of each site

- the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th sites use the same layout, but I presume they should not all have the same Title (as they do now).  In fact, none of the Titles seem particularly appropriate.  Have you done your keyword research for each?

- put more content on the home pages of each of the first three sites rather than a snip of content and then a 'More' text link (speaking of which, 'More' isn't very effective anchor text)

- upgrade your content per www.seo-blog.com/text.php

- add appropriate alt text for your images

- some useful outbound links would be helpful

- content first - you want your content to appear first in your source, ie. before navigation (sample layouts with content first in source - www.pmob.co.uk/temp/3colfixedtest_sourcenone.htm & www.positioniseverything.net/piefecta-rigid.html - pretty much any layout can be done this way)

- the layouts fall apart in Firefox, you should make them more cross-browser compatible

- the 4th site has broken links, good internal navigation is important - overall, the presentation of information in each site is somewhat confusing.  Take the time to re-read this info - www.seo-blog.com/information-architecture.php and www.seo-blog.com/first-impressions.php

(An aside - Reba MacIntyre is spelled incorrectly on the first site)

It gives you a starting point.  One of the most important things to remember is that optimization is an ongoing process or refining and tracking results for as long as the site exists.  We can go a long way one step at a time :)
