Cannot access user mailbox

I have a user that no longer exists but his mailbox does.  Now I need to get into his mailbox.  I tried to recreate an account with the same username.. I didn't think that would work and it didn't.

So any help getting that mailbox open would be great.

Which version of Exchange is this?
Go to Exchange System Manager - Expand Server Name - Expand storage group and Mailbox store - Highlight on "Mailboxes" and right click - click on "Run Cleanup Agent"
You must be able to see this mailbox as a disconnected mailbox (Red cross mark)
Right click on the mailbox and say reconnect. Select the newly created user from the Active Directory and wait for sometime for RUS (Recipient Update Service) to give a new email ID to the user in AD.

Login to the mailbox with user credentials.

2003.. there is no red cross box.  Already ran clean up agent.

in case, its not showing Red cross, means its connected to some user account in AD. try to search this mailbox (user account) in AD and check the user account properties and see if its connected to the correct mailbox.

Reset the password and try to access it.
