Various problems on an SBS 2003 server

Hi All,

I've recently started having several problems with an SBS 2003 box (Dell 1420, SATA, Xeon 3.0, 1GB RAM, SBS 2003) that was running pretty quietly up until now.

I would post these as separate issues, since they may well be, but I think there is a chance that someone may recognise the following symptoms as being related, and it may trigger something, so here goes!

OVERVIEW:

1. When logging into the server, I get a "WMI encountered a problem and needed to close" dialog box, several (between 5-10) times *almost* daily.
2. The daily scheduled SBS Backup routine fails. For the time being, I have set this to just back up to a local drive. If I run the backup manually (using Backup Now in Server Management), it completes successfully. The scheduled backup fails every night. Backup logs available if needed, please see my next post for backup failure details.
3. The application event log repeatedly logs errors, event ID 1000, source: Application error
4. The application event log repeatedly logs errors, event ID 1000, source: Microsoft Exchange Server
5. The application event log has recently stated repeatedly logging the error: event ID 348, source: MSExchange Transport
6. The application event log repeatedly logs warnings, event ID 63, source: WinMgmt
7. Every so often I find the Update Service (this box is running WSUS) service is not started (I've told health monitor to scream when this happens)

HOWEVER, there is no loss of functionality on the network. All users and services (except local backup) are fine!

I think that's all that's for now, various details in the following post!

I recently ran a MANUAL backup using the same backup set - no changes at all, except that I was logged in and did a BACKUP NOW from Server Management. That went through fine. Since then, the logs are different:

Hi there... thanks for providing such detailed information.  I do believe that these may be related... most of them anyhow.  It would be helpful though if you can provide just a bit more.  Please post the results from running SYSTEMINFO at the command prompt.  Please also post a complete IPCONFIG /ALL from the server.

Thanks.

Thanks for the extra info...

It looks as though you had allowed an automatic update of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (which was mistakenly enabled by MS for a short time after it was first released), but have not installed the complete SBS SP1 which consists of 5 components.  This will result in a number of issues that are described in this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897342

Installing the remainder of the components will more than likely resolve all of your problems (well, not all... you may still have issues that are not computer related... but I can't help with that!  :-)  ).

Follow http://sbsurl.com/sp1 and all of it's related linked documents to install SP1 correctly.

Hi Jeff,
thanks for that... I'll install SBS SP1 today to see if that does solve the problems...

Oh yeah, and my car doesn't start and my dishwasher makes strange noises at night (but she shuts up after a while :-p) !!! :-)

Thanks, will let you know how I get on...

Okay now... settle down.  And don't tempt me with that stuff... because I might just bite at the chance to fix those too.

:-)

Hi Jeff,

Not forgotten about this, will do SP1 and post the result (as it happens the WMI errors seem to have stopped...)

Thanks,

Okay... too funny... the following day after you posted the strange noises comment, I was at my brother's house and whadaya know... his refrigerator was making the most annoying noise.  He told me that they had a technician out a couple days before who couldn't get it to stop.  I had it fixed in 10 minutes.  Scarry.

I should have billed him.

Hmm maybe you missed your true calling ;-) Travelling handyman, but whatever your SMB-IT consulting rate is, I'm not sure if travelling handymen get that much!

So, still not had a chance to try this, and it will be a few weeks before I can try it, so I'll accept your solution Jeff, thanks and I'll let you know if it doesn't work!

Cheers
