Information on implementing SMTP

I need to implement an SMTP SERVER on a LAN in VB.NET - are there any components around which will manage this task. The reason I need to develop a smtp server is because the proprierty EPOS  hardware can only transmit emails and the back office application needs  to receive notifications from time to time.
I need a SMTP SERVER to establish that SMTP actually works from proprierty EPOS  hardware before I develop it .(Shareware !!!!!)
I need a third party component or a sample of SMTP protocol in action.

Kind Regards
Turlough
