Windows automatic updates not working

After running fine for 18 months Windows automatic updates on server 2003 has stopped working. I can't even use the Windows update site. On the site i get the following error:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view."

The update log shows:

Hi mathewmc,

Is this client side? or Server Side? Are you using WSUS?
If yes on the WSUS question how is the GPO setup for updates?
Have you run clientdiag.exe on a client?

Cheers!
regards,

I am not using WSUS. The automatic update utility on this server, running server 2003 standard, no longer works. Nor does going to the Windows update site.
Since I have not got any further posts, nor I have I found an answer on other sources, I increased the points on this.
Have you tried this MS article.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896226
This is not XP, it is not behind a firewall and there are no proxyservers. It is Windows Server 2003 standard. It does use the Windows firewall. However, when I disable the firewall automatic updates still do not work.
It doesn't look like anyone can answer this. Even with that being the case, I would like to keep this issue open so when I do find an answer I can post it here incase some one else has this problem.
Try resetting the IUSR password.
Here is an article on how to do it.
http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/48361/48361.html
That didn't do it.
I would like to leave the question open. I have an open ticket with Microsoft and when the issue is fixed I would like to post the solution here for other members to find. I would rather they not have to pay Microsoft to fix this they way I have.
This issue was fixed after applying Windows 2003 SP2.

It is available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95ac1610-c232-4644-b828-c55eec605d55&DisplayLang=en

I just ran across this same error, and was able to get www.windowsupdate.com to pull down updates by doing the following:

- stopping the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service
- stopping the "Automatic Updates" service
- remove the <c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution> directory and all subdirs
- start BITS and Auotmatic Updates services

Tried windowsupdate website again and it worked like a charm.
