PHP and direct communication with different servers:  existing libraries?

I know CURL to communicate to many different types of servers directly. Are the other packages available? what is the best?

Snoopy is a pretty good class for handling external pages.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/snoopy/

You can specify page and port etc and pull the source though and even make POST requests to forms and drag back the request.
