Oracle logminer is comes with 9i. Logmnr is invoked by START_LOGMNR procedure.

here is some detailed information and setup on Logmnr:

Yes newer versions of TOAD have logminer (ver: 8.0, 9.0)  but I suggest you run logminer from sqlplus as that will give you more in-depth understanding. Logminer concept is very easy to learn and understand. Let me know if you need any documentation or steps on running logminer to dectect SCN# of a transaction.

no. you don't need to add table or make any changes to the tables. LOGMINER primary function is to detect SCN# for a transaction that it reads from current, INACVTIVE, ACTIVE as well as redo log files. Datafiles are not used in logminer.

Any file with extension .log, .arc (Archive log files) . Logminer is a very smart. If SCN# is current it won't let you add new data to logminer dictionary and terminate itself. So, there is nothing to worry about.

What type of recovery are you running? CANCEL, SEQUENCE, TIME BASED or SCN# based? Let me know.

Then you will not be able to use logmnr. In order to compile logmnr procedure you need to connect as user "SYS" . Backup and recovery is typicall a job of a DBA. If you are not a DBA then please contact your DBA, explain the problem and give him/her as much information you can so that he/she can recovery your lost transaction or restore database. DBA will know which recovery option to use, I am sure he/she have recovered database at some point in there career.

Here are the detailed steps on using Logmnr. I am not sure if these apply to version 8  as I have never used logmnr in version8 but I can definately help you in getting started with Logmnr.
