SBC/ATT SMTP authentication for hotspot?
I need to set up a free, unsecured hot spot at a resort that is fed by an SBC/ATT DSL account. The problem is authentication of outgoing emails. Everything else works just fine. How do I get around the SBC/ATT SMTP authentication requirements for users using email client software?

Hi Trilotech,
You are addressing correctly what I asked. I was hoping there was a way around this I hadn't thought of. There is a local ISP who will allow anyone to use their SMTP server provided the IP address had downloaded email within the past hour. Others in the area are using this ISP, but this business has discontinued them and switched to SBC/ATT DSL. They do not want to switch back, and now I'm stuck for a solution. What about doing this with an application in a pc such as PuclicIP? Would that provide the authentication transparent to the user?

Are you still working on this? Can you close out this question before the cleanup crew gets around to it?
Thanks!

I do want to split the points between Irmoore and Trilotech. I tried to select an accepted and an assisted answer and then got locked out. Can TheLearnedOne help?

Okay, you guys split the points!

Every single person that comes to the resort is going to have their own configuration. They would not be able to send mail from their account through SBC/ATT SMTP servers even with auth (I believe) and their computers would not be configured to do so anyway. Their computers will be configured to send through whatever SMTP server they have always used. People who travel and use e-mail will have already faced this problem. They will either be using web based e-mail or sending through their ISP's or company's SMTP server. Those who have not yet run into this problem, and it happens to them when they come to your resort are all going to be on a case by case basis with different reasons for not being able to send mail. (ex. their ISP will not route e-mail not coming from within their own network.) The soluitons to these people are going to vary depending on their situation.
Unless you are talking about giving everyone an e-mail address to use while there or talking about employees there who will have SBC/ATT email accounts. These people will have to be configured to use SMTP auth.
Am I addressing what you are needing? Or am I mis-interpreting your question?
