lowering _alpha reveals underlying lines of a composite shape

In a movieclip, I have created a complex shape by overlaying one simple shape over another.  Imagine putting a rectangle partially over a triangle.  Everything is fine and the rectangle will cover some of the triangle's lines.

Now, I need to change the _alpha to 80 so that the complex shape becomes semi-transparent.  The problem surfaces at this point.  Because the rectangle is semi-transparent, it reveals the triangle's line beneath it.

Is there a way to set this complex shape to semi-transparent w/o revealing the triangle's lines?    The Triangle must have both an outline and a fill.  Is there a way to "combine" the two shapes in actionscript into one complex shape?
