SBS Backup, backs up the backup file.

Hello,

Whilst configuring an SBS computer to backup to an external HDD, I noticed the job is trying to copy the backed up files as part of the backup job itself.  I tried to remove the actual backup folders from the job, but SBS would not allow their removal.

How could I remove the backup folders and preserve the backup's integrity?

Did you run the SBS Backup wizard to do this backup, or did you create it manually?

The wizard shows a screen listing the drives and allows you to add custom excluded folders.  On that list, X:\Backup Files is already included (the folder that the backups are going to), but the rest of the X: drive does get included in the backup by default.  So if you are using this drive for other things, you'll want to add an exception for X:\.

(You'll want to replace X with the letter of your USB drive in the above paragraph)

The drive is just for backups, it contains backup jobs from other machines.  There is no need to backup those files as they are backups themselves.  How can I just omit that drive from the job?

Thx

I have tried that, but the resulting error message goes as follows:

"This folder is part of the backup set and cannot be excluded from the backup job"

???

Can't help you there.  I just re-ran the wizard on my server to test it.  Ran the wizard once to remove the exclusion.  Ran it again to add.  No errors, not sure what would cause one.  You are hitting the "Exclude Folders" folders on the 4th screen of the Backup Wizard, right?  When you adding folders, you get the "Browse Folders" view, where you should be able to select the drive you want to exclude.  (Don't try excluding the specific "Backup Files" folder, just the drive itself.
I guess the best answer is not to use SBS backup, but Veritas is so bad and extremely difficult to use, what's left?
