Member server went down lost exchange connection

I have a puzzling question.  I have a windows 2003 server network.  I have two DC that are windows 2003 and one the is 2000.  When I unplug one server from the network I lose connection to my exchange server which sits on the other domain controller which i thought had all the primary functions.  I dont get it.  I want to be able to take the one domain controller offline if I need to and not lose exchange or network functionality.

the exchange server already has the following roles

PDC Emulator
RID Master

Can the global catalog server be on the same server as these other roles?  Can I have all five roles on the same machines?
i checked the sites and services and it for all three servers it shows all three being checked as a global catalogs?
The global catalog role is not one of the FSMO roles - it is not restricted to a single DC per domain.  Also, it does not matter what FSMO roles the DC holds, or if it holds none at all - it can still be a GC.  You can have one or many global catalog servers on a domain. Exchange is good as long as it can reach the one particular GC that it is pointed to in the RUS settings.

As far as the FSMO roles, in a small domain such as you are describing, they can certainly all be on the same machine without causing problems.
well the exchange server is pointing to itself as a global catalog.
OK - I crossposted with you, so here's the answer to your last...In that case, what you want to do is be sure that the Exchange server is pointed to a DC that is not going to be shut down.  You can do this by changing the setting whenever you have to take one of the GC's down, or you can set it to use itself so that it will never have any problems, unless of course it goes down itself...
nevermind..i figured it out.  thanks
